... The numbers on the Resolution Trust offering totaled $145 billion, which was to help shut down a few dozen bankrupt savings and load. All of the unpayable debt was being moved off the balance sheets of the government-insured thrifts and into the fineprint footnotes of the government-backed Resolution Trust. It was a perfectly legal accounting transaction that would make the S&Ls' embarrassing $145 billion loss disappear from the public eye, and though the government had done nothing yet to figure out how it was going to pay back the bonds, it did discover that the Federal Reserve could print enough money to pay the interest until it was all figured out.
The bonds didn't come due for thirty years, and everyone had confidence that by the year 2024 the United States government would be such a bloated, gargantuan scarfing pig, that it'd never notice this little $145 billion invoice. That would be loose change in 2024. It would be nothing compared to radioactive-uranium storage barrels, which were scheduled to be dug out of the Utah desert in 2020 and atomically defused. It would seem like small potatoes compared to the cost of cleaning up all our river and lakes, which private industry had polluted for 110 years before the government stepped in and told them that what they were doing was perfectly legal. Well heck, the S&Ls had only five or six years to pollute the financial system before the government stepped in and told them that it would bail out all their losses.
But still, $145 billion was such a gargantuan, monstrous, scandalous sum that the salespeople couldn't take it seriously and joked about how the RTC ate money like Godzilla ate Tokyo.
"They are asking for gillion zillions", Lisa Lisa explained to Honolulu Federal.
"A jillion trillions," surmised Regis Reed.
