Autumn is in full swing. But its arrival was slow this year. It seemed as though it couldn't make up its mind and, as we sometimes put one leg into water trying to decide whether to enter or not, Autumn was probing the water by sending rain one day and wind the next. And in between, while it was thinking, we had such sunny warm days that I begged Autumn to keep thinking for as long as possible, or better still – not to make up its mind until April or May, and then just give up the whole idea.

But Autumn finally ditched the dithering and decided to come. And as if to make up for taking so long, Autumn decided to arrive like some femme fatale to the ball – to make such an extravagant entrance that all would gasp and press themselves against the walls. In other words, we had a typhoon – a wall of pouring rain and hurricane winds for three days.

Autumn… I want to hibernate, to go into a deep sleep until May or at least April. But unfortunately, in this reincarnation I'm not a bear or frog or snake… So what is left is poems. In Autumn I am drawn to them as in no other season. Today the sky is grey and the mood is kind of grey too. But with a good book in hand, even the greyest day of autumn is not that bad.

Without a moment’s rest in thousands of years”

December... the year end is near, so like it or not, I have to look back. And what do I see? Many things: some were good, some very good and some not so good. Also some things were bad and some just downright awful. But well, I guess I spent this year as best as I could. Or to be honest, not “as best as I could”, but “as okay as I could”. Because if it was “as best as I could”, I should have been at least three kilos lighter (my version of the “best”) or five kilos heavier (mom’s version of my “best”). Forty or something years later I’ll probably say “Oh well, I spent this life as best as I could” and mean “as okay as I could”.

Things were so good and so different when we were little. I counted days till the New Year and winter holidays. All my thoughts were about interesting, fun and exciting things that were going to happen in the coming year. And there was no looking back – whatsoever. I used to come out of the old year like a horse from a river – shook off the water and just went ahead. Now I shake the water off, carefully look around and gaze back onto the river. Then slowly putting one foot in front of the other, plod towards the new year thinking about a thousand things.

Anyway, I’d say I had a good year. Families and friends, cities and skyscrapers, mountains and temples, planes and trains... winter was cold, spring was mellow, summer was hot, autumn was reddily-yellowly-greenly-orangely-bronzely-scarletly and just-out-of-scale insanely beautiful. But most importantly, there were enchantments and, unfortunately – disenchantments. However, I wish myself another enchanted year.

P.S. Honestly, this autumn was so beautiful... But yeah, I guess every autumn must have been that beautiful if I had bothered enough to get on a train and visit the places I knew I should have. But getting off my ass was as hard as ever, and this year was no exception. Still, I had a good year.

The beginning of a new year... a time when people are celebrating... and hoping, wishing, planning... And I am no exception – I am thinking about plans and goals for the new year. Some goals are certain – they remain the same year after year. Other goals are not so certain – I don’t even know where to start, so I am just beating around the bush, looking at those bushes from different angles.

But there is also something that is hard to explain. It’s difficult to attach precise words like goal, aim, dream or hope – because nothing is clear or everything is unclear. I just want... want to...

I suppose, it was this state of mind in which fairy tale tsarinas ordered brave young men to “Go there – I don’t know where, and bring that – I don’t know what”. I always thought this to be the height of women’s caprice, because – could it get more capricious than that? But now, when the fairy-tale-reading-time of my life is long over, I kind of understand those ladies – and I am not capricious, not a bit. But sadly, there are no heroic handy men around to send somewhere with this task, so as always it is up to "me, myself and I”.

It’s nice to live in the eighteenth year of this century, but once in a while, a fairy tale looks nicer.

P.S. No offence to my Russian friends, but I used to think that the Russian women are the most capricious ones because only Russian fairy tales had these tsarinas ordering to “Go there, I don’t know where and bring that, I don’t know what.”
