Rains

Rains, rains, rains…

June and humidity and drizzling rain – Japan is in the middle of the rainy season, and I am in the middle of a melancholy season. But not the one Sofia Rotaru sings so beautifully about.

I would like to ask the Earth to kindly slow down a bit so that I can get off… to breathe the cosmic cool, to admire the Great Divide, to watch the void, to float here and there… or maybe just collect my thoughts. Sure, I know it’s impossible to breathe out there in the great darkness, but knowing is one thing and wanting is another. I can easily imagine the cosmic cool filling my lungs, tuning my heart but, most importantly, calming my brain, which seems to be on the verge of boiling.

But, anyway, better to talk about the brighter side of things. Soon the rain will stop, the heat will arrive, and I will be happy again – because my personal climate heaven is no rain, a lot of sun, +30°C and some humidity. But, then again, even with everyday rain, things are okay. “Instead of happiness, say I, custom's bestowed us from on high” (*) said the poet, but maybe he was mistaken – custom's bestowed us not from on high, but from childhood. Ten years of living in Japan, and my skin is still surprised by warm rain. My childhood in Mongolia instilled into my skin a belief that rain is cold, and it does not matter when or where it rains – in the Gobi desert or in mountains with eternal snow hats. And therefore, throughout summer, there is going to be a sequence of little, nanosecond wonders when soft, warm rain drops reach me under the umbrella.
